The Problem with Most Vision and Mission Statements

(And Why It’s Time to Do Better)

Walk into any school district and you’ll likely find the same thing: a framed vision or mission statement hanging on the wall. Maybe it’s in the lobby, maybe it’s on the website. It’s there, but how often is it truly used?

The truth is, most foundational statements in education are everywhere, but not exactly beloved. They’re rarely referenced. Often forgettable. And for most of your staff, families, and even leaders, they don’t feel personal or useful.

So why keep doing it the same way?

If no one sees themselves in your statements, they won’t see the point.

When foundational statements are written in a vacuum or pulled from outdated strategic plans, they often miss the mark. They fail to reflect the real voices, values, and priorities of the people they’re meant to represent.

In our work with schools, we’ve found that these statements can do so much more. They can become a shared language across your district. A litmus test for decisions. A rallying cry for culture.

But only if they’re built the right way.

Our 2024 Parent Survey says it all: People are paying attention.

Families told us they’re looking beyond basic satisfaction. They want to know:

  • What does the district stand for?

  • Does it reflect my values?

  • How is this communicated, not just once, but over time?

In today’s educational landscape, public schools are facing more competition, more scrutiny, and more pressure to clearly communicate what makes them different. A district’s vision, mission, and “why” aren’t just internal artifacts anymore. They’re public-facing signals of identity and direction.

What’s possible when you do it right?

This spring, we worked with Bloomfield Hills Schools to do exactly that. Through deep engagement with students, families, staff, and community members, we uncovered the values and aspirations that truly define the district. We analyzed survey results, facilitated workshops, and collaborated with leadership to develop multiple sets of new foundational statements, each one grounded in community insight.

The result? A shared foundation the district can actually use to communicate clearly, build culture, and plan for the future. It’s not just wall art. It’s a launchpad.

Foundational statements aren’t just for the “About” page.

They’re for:

  • Guiding communications and marketing

  • Supporting enrollment and retention efforts

  • Aligning strategic planning

  • Reinforcing culture across staff and students

  • Giving families a reason to choose—and stay

In other words: the work you’re already doing becomes easier and more aligned when everyone’s speaking the same language.
